DIY Scented Mason Jar Oil Candles: A Step-by-Step Guide

Scented mason jar oil candles are not only an excellent way to add ambiance to your space, but they’re also incredibly easy to make and customizable. With a few basic ingredients, you can create elegant, aromatic candles that will fill your home with your favorite scents. These candles are perfect for home décor, as gifts, or for setting the mood during a relaxing evening.

Materials You’ll Need:

  • Mason jars (any size, but small-to-medium jars are ideal)
  • Olive oil or other vegetable oil (like canola or sunflower oil)
  • Floating wicks (or you can make your own wicks with cotton string and a metal washer)
  • Essential oils (choose your favorite scents: lavender, eucalyptus, lemon, etc.)
  • Dried herbs or flowers (optional, such as lavender buds, rosemary, or rose petals)
  • Decorative elements (optional, such as twine, ribbons, or charms to wrap around the jars)

Step-by-Step Instructions:

Step 1: Prepare the Mason Jars

Start by choosing the size and style of mason jars you’d like to use. Clean and dry them thoroughly to ensure there’s no dirt or dust inside.

Step 2: Add Decorative Touches (Optional)

If you want to add an extra aesthetic touch, wrap the neck of the mason jars with twine or ribbon. You can even glue small charms or labels on the outside for a personalized look. Adding dried herbs or flower petals to the bottom of the jar not only enhances the visual appeal but also adds a natural fragrance.

Step 3: Fill the Jar with Oil

Fill the jar about 3/4 of the way with olive oil or any other vegetable oil. Olive oil burns cleanly and slowly, making it a great option for this DIY project. You can also experiment with other oils like canola or sunflower oil.

Step 4: Add Essential Oils

Once the jar is filled with oil, add 10-20 drops of your chosen essential oils. The amount will depend on the size of the jar and how strong you want the scent to be. Feel free to mix and match different essential oils to create your own custom fragrance blend. For example, lavender and eucalyptus create a calming scent, while lemon and peppermint can be refreshing.

Step 5: Insert the Wick

If you’re using floating wicks, simply place them on top of the oil. These wicks float on the surface of the oil and are ready to use. If you’re making your own wick, cut a piece of cotton string, thread it through a metal washer, and let it soak in the oil for a few minutes before lighting it.

Step 6: Light and Enjoy!

Once the wick is set, light the candle and enjoy the warm, glowing light along with the lovely scent that fills the room. The oil will slowly be used up as the candle burns, but you can easily top it off with more oil and essential oils to keep the candle burning longer.

Tips and Tricks:

    • Safety first: Never leave burning candles unattended, and place them on a heat-resistant surface.
    • Keep the wick trimmed: If you’re using homemade wicks, trimming them before each use can help control the flame size.
    • Use glass paint: If you’re feeling creative, decorate the outside of the mason jars with glass paint for a custom look.
    • Experiment with oils: Different vegetable oils can change the burn time and scent intensity. Try coconut oil for a tropical twist or almond oil for a more luxurious scent.

These DIY oil candles are a sustainable and cost-effective alternative to store-bought candles.
